The Mediterranean diet prevents depression

According to a study by the University of Navarra, this kind of diet prevents disease risk by 40 or 50 percent.

A study conducted by the University of Navarra, whose findings are published in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry, shows that the traditional Mediterranean diet is associated with reduced risk of depression.

The project consisted in studying the evolution of 10,094 volunteers at the start of the investigation were not depressed. “They were followed for four and a half years and it was noted that 480 developed a depression. We compared the frequency of occurrence of the disease in relation to their initial classic Mediterranean diet,” details the professor at the University of Navarra Miguel Angel Martínez-González.

The results revealed that those who followed the Mediterranean diet had a reduced risk of developing depression between 40 and 50 percent. This indicates, according to the professor, “that the Mediterranean diet may play a role in preventing depression.”

According to the study, the protective capacity of the Mediterranean diet against depression may be associated with a higher intake of certain B vitamins and folic acid in products of plant origin, including fruits and vegetables.
