Watch out for potentially dangerous chemicals. Certain chemicals in the household, while maybe useful in maintaining the cleanliness at home may justify its existence, it also have disadvantages especially to pregnant women. Paint, pesticides and herbicides can pose potential danger into having a healthy pregnancy. Even the innocent-looking makeup can also be a culprit.
Cleaning products. Household cleaning products may contain substances that should be as much as avoided by pregnant woman. Harmful chemicals such as triclosan, alkylphenol ethoxylates, volatile organic compounds (VOC) are some of the chemicals that are found on cleaning products.
Alkylphenol ethoxylates are known as endocrine disruptors, these can interfere with, mimic or block human hormones and are present on hair colors, spot removers and other hair care products. VOC on meanwhile can put pregnant woman at risk of having babies with neurological problems, retarded growth, and developmental problems. Some of the known VOC are Xylenes and Tuolene.
Toiletries and makeup. Soap, hair products, deodorants and makeup have been part of a woman’s daily lives. Yet these items should be shunned during pregnancy as they contain ingredients that can cause allergies, premature birth and even sperm damage. Some of these substances were named as Parabens, Phthalates, and other Parfum identities.
Mercury exposure. Although most of the items we used today in our homes claim it to be mercury-free, there are still those that contain mercury. Some of them are latex paint, light bulbs and batteries. When these items worn out, its mercury content can leak and contaminate the air and water that could be dangerous to one’s health. In addition, one should also watch out eating types of fish that have high risk exposure to mercury. Some of them are tuna, shark, king mackerel, and swordfish. Mercury exposure can create problems on brain functioning and developmental delays in babies.
Nothing can replace excellent pre-natal care. Taking extra care even right in your home could makea big difference towards a healthy pregnancy. At the same time, taking your prenatal vitamins, eating well and staying active will help to bring your baby into the world with the best possible welcome. The ideas above are simply a guideline to help keep you on the road to a healthy and happy pregnancy.
